Winter in Zuberec
Zuberec is the gateway to the Roháče – Zverovka/Spálená ski resort, about 9 km from the village in the heart of the Western Tatras. The resort has runs for beginners and more experienced skiers, a ski school for children, and groomed cross-country trails, a shorter and a longer one, over 8 km. The season usually runs from early December to the end of April, depending on snow conditions.
If skiing isn’t your thing, you can head out for a winter walk toward the Roháče valley. In summer this is where the popular nature trail to the Roháče tarns starts; in winter parts of the route may be closed due to avalanche risk, so it’s worth checking TANAP’s current visitor rules before you go.
After a day outside, you’ll appreciate coming back to your own warm place. Most cottages and apartments in Zuberec have a fireplace or at least somewhere to dry your gear, and some hosts also offer a sauna. Since you’re staying directly with locals, you can ask ahead of time what conditions are actually like on the slopes or the trail.
